{"id":44,"date":"2009-04-25T19:28:50","date_gmt":"2009-04-26T02:28:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hd4pc.com\/techblog\/2009\/04\/25\/nab-wrap-up\/"},"modified":"2009-04-25T19:28:50","modified_gmt":"2009-04-26T02:28:50","slug":"nab-wrap-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hd4pc.com\/techblog\/2009\/04\/25\/nab-wrap-up\/","title":{"rendered":"NAB Wrap Up"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>AJA had a number of new products on display, and it seems that the new revisions fix most of the issues that I have had in the past.\u00c2\u00a0 The Xena LH card used to prevent realtime preview in AE, at 1920&#215;1080 due to frame caching bandwidth limits.\u00c2\u00a0 The new <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.aja.com\/products\/xena\/xena-lhi.php\">Xena LHI\u00c2\u00a0<\/a>is supposed to fix\u00c2\u00a0that problem, as well as add 3G SDI and HDMI 1.3 I\/O.\u00c2\u00a0 The new SDI to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.aja.com\/products\/converters\/converters-hd-hi53g.php\">HDMI Mini-convertor <\/a>adds 3G SDI support, full 10bit output, and now allows remapping 8 available audio channels.\u00c2\u00a0 HDMI expects L,R,C,S,Ls,Rs while Premiere outputs L,R,Ls,Rs,C,S for surround sound, and this has led to the need for some interesting work arounds in our editing rooms.\u00c2\u00a0 I mentioned the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.aja.com\/products\/io\/io-express.php\">IO Express <\/a>in my last post, and this differs from the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.aja.com\/products\/io\/io-hd.php\">IOHD<\/a> in having a faster PCIe interface to the host system, with similar I\/O connectivity, in a smaller physical unit.\u00c2\u00a0 It is also the first AJA IO product that is PC compatible.\u00c2\u00a0 I am hoping that this device is similar enough to the Xena series of cards, that Cineform will adopt integrated support for it, giving us 10bit compressed HD I\/O\u00c2\u00a0on a laptop.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\nAJA&#8217;s new\u00c2\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.aja.com\/products\/ki-pro\/\">Ki Pro<\/a> is pushing into a totally new territory for the company, as a standalone recording device.\u00c2\u00a0 It records from SDI, HDMI, or analog, directly from\u00c2\u00a0a camera or any other video source.\u00c2\u00a0 It encodes video\u00c2\u00a0into Apple&#8217;s ProRes 422\u00c2\u00a0codec onto either a Firewire 800\u00c2\u00a0removal hard disk or an ExpressCard34 Flash storage device.\u00c2\u00a0 With output connectivity as well, it basically functions as a ProRes based VTR.\u00c2\u00a0 It is actually quite similar in\u00c2\u00a0capability\u00c2\u00a0to the next new product on my list.<\/p>\n<p>Convergent Design had\u00c2\u00a0both of their digital recording\u00c2\u00a0devices on display.\u00c2\u00a0 The <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.convergent-design.com\/CD_Products_FlashXDR.htm\">Flash XDR<\/a> has been available for a while, but I have been waiting for the smaller <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.convergent-design.com\/CD_Products_nanoFlash.htm\">NanoFlash<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 It can record full 1080p HD-SDI or HDMI\u00c2\u00a0onto CompactFlash cards in the same MPEG format as Sony&#8217;s new XDCam-HD422 gear.\u00c2\u00a0 It is absolutely tiny, at about half the size of a 3.5&#8243; hard drive, and is solid state.\u00c2\u00a0 I can envision a number of uses for it in rigging small camera&#8217;s on vehicles and in other rough spots.\u00c2\u00a0 The most challenging spot is usually as a backpack recorder for a helmet cam.\u00c2\u00a0 If Iconix ever releases a smaller CCU for their <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.iconixvideo.com\/products.html\">Studio2K<\/a>, the backpack may someday become a belt.\u00c2\u00a0 The HDMI input allows cheap camcorders to record at much higher quality than their internal storage allows.<\/p>\n<p>One other\u00c2\u00a0thing that I didn&#8217;t notice until after the show was over, was that NVIDIA announced a new SDI I\/O solution, which should become available later this year.\u00c2\u00a0 <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nvidia.com\/object\/product_quadro_sdi_output_us.html\">SDI output <\/a>is nothing new for NVIDIA, and has been available as an option since back when the AGP based QuadroFX 4000 was the top of the line.\u00c2\u00a0 I had heard over two years ago that\u00c2\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nvidia.com\/object\/product_quadro_sdi_capture_us.html\">SDI input <\/a>capability\u00c2\u00a0was in development, but\u00c2\u00a0the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nvidia.com\/object\/quadro_dvp.html\">Quadro Digital Video Pipeline\u00c2\u00a0<\/a>has been the first sign of it becoming a reality.\u00c2\u00a0 Based on the developments in GPU accelerated encoding with the Quadro CX, I predicted last year that this must be\u00c2\u00a0coming soon.\u00c2\u00a0 I am still curious to see the details on how this will be implemented at the software level, and more specifically, what types of realtime HD\u00c2\u00a0compression will be supported.\u00c2\u00a0 The fact that it supports multistream capture is somewhat unique, and will be very useful as stereoscopic video production becomes more common.<\/p>\n<p>That\u00c2\u00a0pretty much sums up\u00c2\u00a0the main things that stood out to me at NAB.\u00c2\u00a0 I have deliberately steered clear of discussing a few products that I will be using a lot\u00c2\u00a0in the near future.\u00c2\u00a0 I plan to post much more detailed info on those products and the related workflows once I have experienced them first hand on large projects.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>AJA had a number of new products on display, and it seems that the new revisions fix most of the issues that I have had in the past.\u00c2\u00a0 The Xena LH card used to prevent realtime preview in AE, at 1920&#215;1080 due to frame caching bandwidth limits.\u00c2\u00a0 The new Xena LHI\u00c2\u00a0is supposed to fix\u00c2\u00a0that problem, [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[8],"tags":[18,24,37,35,19],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.hd4pc.com\/techblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/44"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.hd4pc.com\/techblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.hd4pc.com\/techblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.hd4pc.com\/techblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.hd4pc.com\/techblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=44"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/www.hd4pc.com\/techblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/44\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":150,"href":"https:\/\/www.hd4pc.com\/techblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/44\/revisions\/150"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.hd4pc.com\/techblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=44"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.hd4pc.com\/techblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=44"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.hd4pc.com\/techblog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=44"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
