{"id":429,"date":"2012-11-20T14:50:10","date_gmt":"2012-11-20T21:50:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.hd4pc.com\/techblog\/?p=429"},"modified":"2012-11-20T14:50:10","modified_gmt":"2012-11-20T21:50:10","slug":"new-sony-4k-products","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.hd4pc.com\/techblog\/2012\/11\/20\/new-sony-4k-products\/","title":{"rendered":"New Sony 4K Products"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It would seem that I missed a few important new hardware announcements while I was traveling in Europe.\u00c2\u00a0 As to be expected, most of them revolve around <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/4K_resolution\" target=\"_blank\">4K production<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Sony announced two new 4K cameras, both of which have a very modular design.\u00c2\u00a0 The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bhphotovideo.com\/c\/product\/898428-REG\/Sony_PMW_F55_CineAlta_4K_Digital.html\/BI\/6727\/KBID\/7302\" target=\"_blank\">PMW-F55<\/a> will fit near the top of their lineup, just below the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ultra-high-definition_television\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;8K&#8221;<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/pro.sony.com\/bbsc\/ssr\/cat-camerascineproduction\/cat-cineprodcinealta\/product-F65RSPAC1\/\" target=\"_blank\">F65<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 It will capture and output up to uncompressed 16bit 4K RAW to an outboard recorders, and record 300Mb <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/XAVC\" target=\"_blank\">XAVC<\/a> compressed 4K to <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/SxS\" target=\"_blank\">SxS<\/a> cards internally.\u00c2\u00a0 It can also capture up to 240fps at 2K, or 180fps internally.\u00c2\u00a0 The biggest feature that will differentiate it from other 4K cameras is it &#8220;global shutter&#8221; which should eliminate all potential <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rolling_shutter\" target=\"_blank\">rolling shutter artifacts<\/a> that can plague other large single sensor CMOS cameras.\u00c2\u00a0 Price estimates vary, but if this camera becomes available at the expected $25-35K price point, it will really shake up the market.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\nThe lower end <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bhphotovideo.com\/c\/product\/898427-REG\/Sony_PMW_F5_CineAlta_Digital_Cinema.html\/BI\/6727\/KBID\/7302\" target=\"_blank\">PMW-F5<\/a> will fit in above the currently popular <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bhphotovideo.com\/c\/product\/848144-REG\/Sony_PMW_F3L_RGB_PMW_F3L_Super_35mm_Full_HD.html\/BI\/6727\/KBID\/7302\" target=\"_blank\">PMW-F3<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 It has a 4K sensor, but will only record 2K internally.\u00c2\u00a0 This seems similar to Canon&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bhphotovideo.com\/c\/product\/855975-REG\/Canon_EOS_C500_Cinema_EOS.html\/BI\/6727\/KBID\/7302\" target=\"_blank\">C500<\/a>, in that capturing full 4K requires an external recorder.\u00c2\u00a0 The external recorder also allows high speed recording up to 120fps.\u00c2\u00a0 The F5 is expected to be priced between $15K and $20K, which will compete with Canon&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bhphotovideo.com\/c\/product\/839220-REG\/Canon_5779B002_C300_Cinema_EOS_Camcorder.html\/BI\/6727\/KBID\/7302\" target=\"_blank\">C300<\/a>, with much more capability.<\/p>\n<p>The externally recorder that unlocks the 4K RAW and high speed options in both of these cameras, is the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bhphotovideo.com\/c\/product\/898429-REG\/Sony_AXS_R5_AXS_R5_4K_RAW_EXTERNAL.html\/BI\/6727\/KBID\/7302\" target=\"_blank\">AXS-R5<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 It records to new SSD format from Sony, called AXSM.\u00c2\u00a0 This will fit below <a href=\"http:\/\/pro.sony.com\/bbsc\/ssr\/cat-srmemory\/cat-memory\/\" target=\"_blank\">SR Memory <\/a>in the lineup, and the media will initially be available in half terabyte units.\u00c2\u00a0 There will be a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bhphotovideo.com\/c\/product\/898433-REG\/Sony_AXS_CR1_AXS_CR1_USB_3_0_CARD.html\/BI\/6727\/KBID\/7302\" target=\"_blank\">USB3 Reader <\/a>available to access the content from a workstation or laptop.\u00c2\u00a0 The recorder is expected to be $6K, with no word on AXSM media prices.\u00c2\u00a0 Without the recorder, both new cameras also have the dual SxS slots, for recording HD internally, compressed as <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/XDCAM_EX#SxS\" target=\"_blank\">XDCam422<\/a>, 10bit XAVC, or Sony&#8217;s SR codec.<\/p>\n<p>Sony also announced a new full 4K monitor to go with their new camera options.\u00c2\u00a0 The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bhphotovideo.com\/c\/product\/898437-REG\/Sony_PVM_X300_PVM_X300_30_4K_MONITOR.html\/BI\/6727\/KBID\/7302\" target=\"_blank\">PVM-X300<\/a> is a 30&#8243; LCD display, with a variety of input options, including Quad <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/HD_SDI\" target=\"_blank\">SDI<\/a>, Quad <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hdmi\" target=\"_blank\">HDMI<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hdmi#Version_1.4\" target=\"_blank\">HDMI 1.4<\/a>, and Dual <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Displayport\" target=\"_blank\">DisplayPort<\/a>.\u00c2\u00a0 It will also have the option to playback 4K content directly from an SxS card.\u00c2\u00a0 There will be a variety of 3rd party color calibration options as well.\u00c2\u00a0 This is not a product I would use, but I am looking forward to when these 30&#8243;
